Change NHS – our thoughts for the NHS of the future

Change NHS is the biggest conversation about the future of the NHS in its history. The government want everyone to have an opportunity to share their views on what they want to see for the NHS in the future.

Patients, the public, NHS staff, and the organisations that run NHS services have all been invited to comment.

We have shared our thoughts as an organisation as to how the NHS needs to shift to help us provide the best possible care for our patients, and you can read more about that here.

What we want to see included in the 10-Year Health Plan

  • A realistic approach to delivery, acknowledging the deprivation of our population and the necessary investment to support this.
  • Looking at the whole system that supports health, not just the NHS, and removing barriers between organisations so that we can deliver the best we can.
  • Collectively committing to what needs to change – and addressing the issues head on.
  • Making the NHS an attractive employer, so that we can retain and attract a workforce that is committed and able to deliver the plan’s ambitions.
  • Measureable goals and outcomes.

The three goals of the 10 Year Health Plan, and our challenges to get there, are:

  • Funding structures across health and social care which make it hard to deliver shared goals.
  • Cultural perceptions of the NHS as hospital-focused.
  • Not enough investment in infrastructure to support our community services to absorb additional demand effectively.
  • Systems not communicating and sharing data between providers.
  • Lack of clear strategy about the use of AI.
  • Lack of accessible staff training to upskill our digital knowledge.
  • Digital exclusion in our population.
  • Lack of investment in new technologies, and lack of infrastructure behind our systems to develop them.
  • Factors outside of the NHS’s control, including all the determinants of poor health that need national change at a government level.
  • Investment to scale up screening programmes.
  • Behavioural change needed to support people to make positive health choices.

And what do we need from government to support us to be the best we can be?

  • Legislation for upstream prevention
  • Integrated planning across systems
  • Capital investment reform
  • Workforce strategy and investment
  • Enabling system-wide collaboration
  • Commitments to health equity
  • Public accountability for private sector activity

The government are currently continuing the conversation across England, until Spring 2025. They will then be holding a National Summit to help them finalise the plan.
