We will soon be rolling out a major new NHS initiative to improve patient safety, called Martha’s Rule.
Martha’s Rule is named for Martha Mills, who tragically died from sepsis aged 13 in 2021, having been treated at a hospital in London. Martha developed sepsis after her parents’ concerns about her rapidly worsening condition were not promptly responded to by the team caring for her.
You know yourself and your loved one better than anyone.
Martha’s Rule gives patients and their families a way of getting an urgent medical review if you feel that you are not getting the help you need.
We are one of a number of hospital sites across England who are taking part in this initiative.
Martha’s Rule will be made up of different processes to make sure that concerns about someone’s condition getting worse can be swiftly responded to.
This includes access to an escalation number 24 hours a day if you have concerns.
More information about Martha’s Rule can be found on NHS England’s website.
