Royal Bolton Hospital has thanked a team of volunteers who helped hundreds of staff celebrate Ramadan.

Throughout the Islamic holy month, Hospital Iftars gave up their time to deliver 1,000 delicious hot and cold free meals to support those breaking their daily fast.

They also provided food for an open iftar event, which saw people of all faiths, and no faith, come together to celebrate Ramadan together.

Nasir Afzal, from Hospital Iftars, said:

As Boltonians, this felt like the least we could do as a sign of respect for our selfless NHS staff. We hope this initiative boosted morale and kept everyone feeling their physical and mental best.

“Bringing food to the fasting brought a huge smile to their faces. Our priority in volunteering is to help and support the Bolton family as humanity always comes first.

“The best thing about volunteering is know you have helped someone in difficult times. We know people would prefer to be in the comfort of their home, especially during Ramadan.

Dozens of local companies provided starters, mains and desserts, including fruits, pasta, pizza and curry.

The UK is currently celebrating Volunteers’ Week, which recognises the amazing contributions volunteers make to communities.

Neville Markham, Head Chaplain at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, said:

The continuing development of working with the local faith communities helps to grow understanding and learning.

“Volunteers are a valuable part of that work through conversation and practical support for staff and patients who feel the support and care that is provided.
