Our Services

Surgery

Our General Surgery service has a high volume of emergency admissions, with short length of stay for surgical patients.

The department provides a variety of complex upper gastrointestinal and colorectal surgeries including for some types of cancer, and a variety of laparoscopic (keyhole) surgeries, both planned and emergency cases.

There is also a Vascular department on site that deals with complex vascular (blood vessel) problems.

In the main theatre suite at the Royal Bolton Hospital there are eight theatres for planned surgery which includes general surgery, gynaecology, ENT, oral maxillofacial, orthopaedic, breast and vascular.

There is also a dedicated 24-hour emergency theatre and an orthopaedic trauma theatre. All our theatre staff complete an intense training programme to develop their competencies in care provided before, during and after operations.

The Surgical Care Unit nursing team admit all patients attending our theatres on a planned/elective basis. Patients are admitted for surgery both on a day case basis (going home on the day of surgery) or where an overnight stay in hospital is required.

It also has a smaller theatre/ treatment room, where patients have procedures carried out under local anaesthesia. We care for adult patients undergoing a range of surgical procedures including orthopaedic, gynaecology, general surgery, plastic, dental, oral, pain management, breast and vascular surgery who will go home the same day.

Our maternity unit also has three dedicated theatres, which are located in our delivery suite. These theatres provide both planned and emergency deliveries in pregnancy.

Our new Elective Care Centre also has four operating theatres, and is located at Royal Bolton Hospital. The ground floor ward and two operating theatres receives patients attending for day case surgery. The first floor ward and two operating theatres has patients attending for elective orthopaedic procedures, both on a day case basis and where an overnight stay in hospital is required.

A short video for how to locate the centre can be found below.

Our Anaesthetic service provides a specialist service in support of surgery, urology, ophthalmology, paediatrics and maternity, caring for patients before, during and after surgery or other procedures.

We also provides extensive educational and training opportunities as well as opportunities in clinical audit and research.
